Our Manor 19-23 June 2023

Welcome to this week's newsletter

Wednesday 21 June was 'National Thank a Teacher Day'. We are very grateful to the parents, carers and students who wrote lovely messages to staff at Manor who go above and beyond to support our community, or continuously get the little things done that support our students every day.

Here are just a few messages that we received which we would like to share in order to celebrate the incredible work of every member of our staff team:

  • Thank you for all your help and support with their A Level course and application to university in your subject.
  • Inspiring, mentoring and supporting both of our children throughout their school journey at Manor. What an amazing lady. Thank you.
  • She pushes us to do our best and encourages us in all our lessons. Plus she has to always listen to our debates as we enter for class.
  • Passing on your passion of your subject to my daughter. She stepped into the unknown two years ago when she started her GCSEs and from day 1 has loved the course and that is thanks to you. She talks very highly of you at home. You are doing an amazing job with the students and I know that you will always be one of her favourite teachers.
  • Thank you for always being patient and re-explaining concepts that I can’t grasp the first time, you truly are a teacher that can change lives. Thank you.

Staff have been receiving these messages this week and we would be thrilled if others wanted to send messages still to be distributed in coming weeks. You can do so by completing this form.

We also said a massive congratulations to our Year 11 and 13 students as they reached the end of their examinations this week. Both year groups had leavers assemblies on Tuesday and Friday to recognise their significant effort during the exam season. We look forward to celebrating with these students on results days in August.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Year 13 leavers

Student illness

If your child contacts you during the school day saying that they are unwell, could we please ask for your support in not collecting them unless you have been contacted by a member of staff.

In the first instance we will always try and encourage your child to be resilient and take steps to alleviate any symptoms. If there is no improvement, we will reassess your child and contact home. It is acceptable for a student to carry minimal pain relief medication if needed.

Science tutoring

We are running science tutoring sessions using government funding through the National Tutoring Programme. These involve small groups of Year 9 and 10 students working with an external provider to support them to be GCSE-ready in science. If your child has been selected to take part, they will already have been informed via their form tutor and will have already attended sessions this week. The feedback from both the tutors and students has been really positive and we thank participating students for their engagement. The science tutoring will continue until Wednesday 5 July whereupon a similar programme of maths tutoring will start.

If you have any questions about why your child was selected to participate, please contact gturner@manor.school

Word of the Week

Each week, the English department focuses on encouraging students to use one ambitious word – it is displayed in classrooms and discussed during teaching. It would be great if adults at home could try to encourage the use of this word too. You could try to fit into a conversation or even question your young person on the meaning. It will be fantastic for the students to see us all working together to help improve their language. Thank you for your support.

The Word of the Week for 19-23 June is timorous.

Sex and relationships lessons

In the next few weeks we will have a team of district nurses coming in to school to deliver the statutory safe sex and relationships lessons. These sessions will include advice related to contraception and raise awareness of infections and consequences of unsafe sex. All students in Year 9 will have a lesson with a nurse in the next few weeks during their WWW lessons.

If there is any reason as to why you would not like your child to partake in these lessons, please inform the school by Friday 30 June.

Tanzania expedition 2025

We are excited to announce that we have another Camps International expedition lined up - this time to Tanzania in 2025. We are hosting assemblies for students in Years 9 and 10, as well as Year 11 students who will be joining the sixth form, on Monday 3 July. These will be followed by a parent/carer information evening on Monday 10 July. Please see the letter below for more details.

Summer music concert

Tickets are now on sale for our summer music concert taking place on Tuesday 4 July. The evening provides an opportunity to see the range of brilliant musicians within our school performing a range of musical styles from classical to pop as soloists or within ensembles.

The Dream

Students from all schools across the Nene Education Trust have been working with Silhouette Youth to create a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, with 21 Year 7 students from Manor involved. Over 150 young people will take to the outdoor stage at Stanwick Lakes to tell this incredible story using the Performing Arts. They have created their own songs to go with the story and have worked hard to use drama and dance to tell the tale.

Tickets are now on sale for each of the three performances in July, and can be booked via the following links:

Summer camp

Bookings are now open for Manor Sports and Leisure summer camp. They offer a range of child-led activities such as sports, arts & crafts, first aid and movie afternoons for children aged 4-11 years old. Please click the following link for full details and to book a place.

Enterprise competition

On Wednesday 21 June, Miss Collier and Mr Hill had the pleasure of taking six Year 9 students to Police HQ at Wootton Hall in Northampton to take part in the Semi-Final of the Northamptonshire County Schools' Challenge, which is a local enterprise competition.

Students were tasked with creating an awareness campaign based around reducing deliberate fire setting and they pitched their social enterprise idea Dragons' Den style. After an amazing pitch, they were able to spend time meeting members of the emergency services and take part in a number of activities such as looking around a police interceptor car, using a fire hose, having a tour of a fire engine, a tour of an ambulance and its equipment, watching a demonstration of working police dogs and being locked in a riot van! Finally, they had a tour around the Northamptonshire Police control room and watched the operatives in action which was fascinating.

The team were fantastic representatives for Manor School, and we are pleased to announce they have now been selected as one of the 8 teams from across Northamptonshire to attend the Grand Final on Monday 3 July where they could take home the winners' trophy and be awarded a prize worth £2000 to develop their idea, which is a board game for Key Stage 3 students called "Sparks".

We wish them all the best for the final!
