Our Manor 8-12 November 2021

Welcome to this week's newsletter

This Thursday we held our Remembrance Service, where we came together as a school community to pay our respects and shine a light on our school REACH value of Empathy. We will both be attending the Remembrance Service on Sunday with the local community.

We would like to remind all students that they should be wearing the correct school uniform when on the school site, which includes no hoodies or headphones. Our uniform policy can be found on our website. We appreciate your support with this matter.

On Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 November, students that have provided consent and who are eligible will receive their COVID vaccine from the on-site NHS nurse team.

Finally, as we start to move towards the upcoming trial examinations, it is important that Year 11 and 13 students are using the strategies provided to start their revision plan in order to be fully prepared. Students should speak to their teachers if they have any questions about the trial examination process.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Performing Arts journalist wanted

The Performing Arts department is looking for a student journalist to come to its concerts/shows and write a report following each event for this newsletter. Interested students should write two paragraphs on why they should be selected as our Performing Arts journalist, and submit this to Miss Barron (mbarron@manor.school) by Friday 19 November. Students should also speak to Miss Barron if they have any questions about the role.

BrewPoint trip

On Monday 8 November Mr Turner and Mr Isaacs took a group of students from their A-Level Food and Nutrition and BTEC Applied Science courses on a trip to a local brewery to find out about the process of manufacturing beer.

BrewPoint is part of Wells and Co and is based in Bedford, having opened in 2020 as both a food and drink venue and a functioning brewery. The students took a tour around and were hosted by the very knowledgeable Lead Brewer, James, and his boss Ian. Students learned about how the conditions are carefully controlled at all stages of the process from the harvest of the barley, through the malting process and then onto the ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ side of the brewing. They found out how different enzymes are activated at different points of the process to carry out specific roles, and how the temperature and pH are manipulated to change the flavour profile of the products. They also learned about the legislation and controls in place to ensure that the customer receives a product that is safe and of high quality.

The students agreed that this was a fascinating opportunity to see the theory they have learned being put into practice and to find out about a career that they didn’t really know much about – despite beer being around for 6000 years! If you want to find out about brewing yourself you can go on your own tour of the brewery and learn about the modern approaches to an age-old process.

District Cross Country event

On Thursday 11 November, 16 runners from across Years 7-11 attended a District Cross Country event, where attendance of all schools in our district was extremely high. Each and every one of our students did themselves and us proud, showing resilience and enthusiasm. Particular congratulations go to Finley S and Louey F who both qualified for the County event for the U17 event where they had to run a distance of 6km.

County netball squad

Earlier this year, a number of our netballers were given the opportunity to attend a trial to be part of the county squad. We are delighted to be able to congratulate Katy B in Year 10 for being successful in gaining a place. This is a fantastic achievement, and the PE department could not be prouder.

Well done Katy - this is well-deserved!

Manor Sports and Leisure

Manor Sports and Leisure provide the community of Raunds and the surrounding area access to excellent, high quality and low-cost hospitality and sports & leisure services; ensuring that all profits are reinvested to continually improve our provision and that of Manor School.

You can download a brochure containing information on their facilities, clubs, classes and much more via the following link.

Online safety

TikTok and Reddit are still increasing in their popularity amongst students, and it is important that parents and carers understand the associated risks, age restrictions, and how to support their children using these platforms which are predominately accessed via mobile devices so are more challenging to monitor.

National Online Safety have produced the following guides for these two platforms.

Manor Maths Challenges

The second week of Barvember brings even more mathematical puzzles to solve. Students should send their solutions to Mrs Radd so that we can congratulate them for their efforts.
