Our Manor 4-7 January 2022

Welcome to this week's newsletter

Welcome back! We are looking forward to everything that 2022 will bring, and have lots of exciting things planned.

We began the week by conducting on-site student lateral flow testing - we want to say thank you to Tom Hatton for co-ordinating this, as well as the members of staff that supported. It demonstrated just how fortunate we are to have such a fantastic staff body.

As our letter at the start of the week mentioned, we are advising students to wear face coverings in the classroom and around the school site. We have supplied students with testing kits and would like to request you support us by ensuring your child is completing testing two times per week. If your child did not receive a testing kit, please go to main reception where we can provide one.

On Tuesday evening we appeared on ITV Anglia News, where some of our Year 7 students spoke about returning to school. A video of the report can be found in this article.

Year 11 and 13 have received their trial examination results, and we are now approaching the final months of study. This is the time for students to act on specific feedback from their classroom teachers and start to implement their revision strategies.

This term we will be reviewing our inclusion strategy which includes behaviour points, detentions and the use of mobile phones. We intend to engage with families over the course of this term, so please do keep an eye on the newsletter in the coming weeks.

Have a fantastic weekend.

PE uniform

A reminder that all students are expected to wear Manor School PE kit. If the uniform is not purchased from the school supplier with the school badges on them, then the items must still be unbranded and navy blue.

No coats or hoodies are permitted to be worn of any description. The only jackets that may be worn are either the waterproof ¼ zip top from the school supplier or a single layer, navy blue cagoule type jacket. In instances of cold weather, students are permitted to wear underlayers, gloves, hats, jumpers and tracksuit bottoms. If students only bring shorts and t-shirts in to wear, the lesson outside will still take place with them being expected to participate, and they will not be allowed to wear their coat.

Thank you in advance for your support in this matter.

Term 3 enrichment activities

Our extra-curricular timetable has been updated for term 3. There are a number of new activities on offer, as well as some changes of day for existing clubs. The current timetable can be viewed on our website.

The following notes apply to PE activities:

  • The finish time of after-school clubs will vary depending on light and weather. Where possible, we will ensure clubs run until 4:30pm but please be aware that this isn’t always possible for activities that take place on the field or the sand astro.
  • All clubs are available for all students to attend. We have a new handball club on a Wednesday and we have Olly Middleton from the RFU coming in to deliver some Rugby during the club on Thursday too. We also have lunchtime clubs running as well as the MSL team offering some morning indoor football, so it would be great to see as many of our students at these sessions as possible.

Sports fixtures

We have a lot of fixtures and competitions coming up, with team selections sent home via schoolcomms. We also display the team and event details on the notice board outside the PE office. If selected to play or participate, students must let the teacher in charge of the event know ASAP whether they can or cannot play.

Year 10 Consultation Evening

Our Year 10 Consultation Evening is being held virtually on Thursday 20 January, 4-8pm.

If you have any queries about the event, please email mdupille@manor.school.

Sixth Form Open Evening

We have taken the very difficult decision to move our open evening to an online event. With current COVID cases very high, we do not want to do anything that will impact on the learning of students currently in our school.

Please visit our website for updated information on how you can access the event virtually.

Sixth Form Progress Leader

We are pleased to announce that Miss Holtman has been appointed to the role of Sixth Form Progress Leader. We are delighted that we can continue to develop the leadership capacity in our expanding sixth form. Miss Holtman will lead the tutor team and manage the day-to-day running of our post-16 provision. Mr Carter will continue to maintain strategic oversight of KS5.

Cambodia expedition 2023

There's still time for students to sign up for our Summer 2023 expedition to Cambodia. The expedition will see students working on a range of sustainable community and conservation projects, as well as undertaking a 4-5 day jungle trek through the Kulen Mountains.

Students are encouraged to fundraise to cover the cost of the trip, teaching them important life skills such as money management, problem solving and event planning. The Camps International team will be on hand to support students and their families with this.

For more information on this once in a lifetime opportunity, please see the following.

Schools v Climate Change

Planet Super League is an organisation working with 50 Professional football teams to promote climate action in a fun, creative way. This is a project running from 10 January to 20 February.

There are over 100 activities that can be completed to help combat climate change and improve the environment, such as litter picking an area, building an insect home, meat-free meals and campaigning against climate change.

To take part, students should do the following:

  • Visit www.planetsuperleague.com and click sign up in the top right-hand corner.
  • Use their school e-mail address and create a password to create an account.
  • Select their preferred football team (this is from the list of clubs taking part).
  • Select their local authority as North Northamptonshire.
  • Select the school Manor School Sports College

Students will then be able to help contribute points to Manor School – lets make our school the best one in the region!

Any questions, feel free to e-mail Mr Andrews at jandrews@manor.school for more information.

Good luck!

Exam certificates

Exam certificates for our 2021 leavers are now ready for collection from main reception. We also still hold a number of certificates dating back to 2016.

Students must provide identification when picking up their certificates. If a third party is collecting on behalf of a former student, they must bring with them a signed letter from the student concerned, otherwise we cannot release the certificates.

Manor Maths Challenges

There are a selection of problems from Mr Barton Maths to kick off the new year. Just don't try out the first problem in person to work out the answer...
