Our Manor 6-10 March 2023

Welcome to this week's newsletter

This week, National Careers Week has given our students the opportunity to reflect through their Work.World.Wellness. lessons on the future careers that they may want to pursue and the characteristics and skills they require to reach their intended destination. We have also had the opportunity to reflect on the distance that we have travelled as a society by recognising the importance of International Women's Day. As always, these events provide the chance for us to relate issues much greater than individuals alone and celebrate our REACH values in the process. In addition, our students have been exceptional this week in their Food practical examinations, again demonstrating incredible resilience in the heat of the kitchen.

The current intention is that next week will be the final two days of industrial action on Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 March. Plans for these two days remain the same as previous days with a slight adaption for students who take Health and Social Care or Dance in Year 10 and all Year 11 students. Parents/carers have been written to separately with arrangements for these cohorts. You may have seen in the media that the Government are hoping to postpone the action. Should this happen, we will update you accordingly next week.

Finally, please allow me to use this opportunity to highlight some key events coming up that celebrate and showcase the successes of our students:

  • Our musical SIX: TEEN EDITION takes place next week. More information is below - we'd love to see lots of support for the students.
  • Our Competitions Week is taking place from Monday 20 March, and we encourage all students to participate.
  • Trips and visits taking place in Year 10 History, Year 13 Public Services and more!

Thank you for your continued support.

Chris Bateman, Acting Deputy Head of School

TikTok

You may have seen in the news recently that a number of schools across the country are seeing the impact of various TikTok trends on student behaviour and welfare. This includes 'Guess Who' style posts where offensive/bullying comments are used to describe another person and students guess who they refer to, as well as the sharing of dangerous protest behaviour such as the improper use of fire extinguishers. We would therefore encourage parents/carers to speak to their children about what they see and interact with on the social media platform.

Please see the below guide for further information on how to help young people use TikTok safely.

EPOCH survey

Student wellness and wellbeing is always at the forefront of our minds here at Manor School, and you may have heard your child mention completing an EPOCH survey in their first WWW lesson of each half term.

We wanted to take this time to share a copy of the survey with you so that you can see what it looks like, and also share the descriptors of each of the EPOCH categories which are Engagement, Perseverance, Optimism, Connectedness and Happiness. Tutors and teachers are able to use the data provided by this survey to then track and support your child and their wellbeing to the best of our ability.

If you have any questions regarding the EPOCH survey, please email your child’s form tutor in the first instance.

Word of the Week

Each week, the English department focuses on encouraging students to use one ambitious word – it is displayed in classrooms and discussed during teaching. It would be great if adults at home could try to encourage the use of this word too. You could try to fit into a conversation or even question your young person on the meaning. It will be fantastic for the students to see us all working together to help improve their language. Thank you for your support.

The Word of the Week for 6-10 March is missives.
